In its own words

README.mdsimonbalfe/codex-workspace-template

A minimal, privacy-conscious starting point for a self-contained Codex workspace.

The repository separates:

  • workspace instructions in AGENTS.md
  • Codex configuration, rules, context, and local skills in .codex/
  • durable notes and project context in obsidian/
  • live code repositories in a separate directory referenced by REPOS_ROOT

It contains no credentials, account identifiers, personal notes, repository history, or machine-specific paths.

Use the template

Create a repository from this GitHub template, then clone it:

Set the two workspace paths in your shell:

Start Codex from the repository root so it loads the root AGENTS.md.

Customize

  • Update AGENTS.md with the routes and constraints that apply to your workspace.
  • Update .codex/AGENTS.md with guidance that should apply across sessions.
  • Add reusable context under .codex/context/.
  • Add local skills under .codex/skills/ /SKILL.md.
  • Add project, system, and reference notes under obsidian/.
  • Record repository locations in obsidian/systems/codex/repositories.md.

Keep live source repositories outside this repository. Use the workspace as a routing and context layer, not as a monorepo for unrelated codebases.
